About the Study

This study is called The STOP (Stop Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients) Study: The effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy in Ontario Smokers.

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the methods and effectiveness of providing Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) to Ontario smokers.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) received funding from the Ministry of Health Promotion to evaluate the effectiveness of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) in Ontario smokers and to evaluate various distribution systems for NRT to Ontario smokers. Smokers receive five (5) weeks of NRT free of charge providing they meet pre-determined criteria developed by the STOP Study Team, consisting of the Investigators, Project Manager and Research Analysts. A number of NRT distribution models are being evaluated. The fourth model is a community pharmacy distribution system.

What does this study offer you?
You will receive five weeks of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (nicotine gum, patch or inhaler) and brief counselling from a participating community pharmacist, free of charge.  After your five weeks of treatment, you will be asked to complete brief online questionnaires to evaluate the effectiveness of this treatment approach.

Am I eligible to participate?
The STOP Study is open to residents of Ontario who are 18 and over, and want to quit smoking using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patch, gum, or inhaler).

Please take a moment to see whether there are any participating pharmacies in your area by clicking on the "Participating Pharmacies" tab. If so, you may then complete the online screening and assessment questionnaire found under the "Enrolment" tab to see whether you meet the criteria to participate in the study. Eligible participants may then contact a participating pharmacy to book an appointment (prior to March 31, 2008) to receive 5 weeks of free NRT plus brief smoking cessation counselling.

This study is sponsored by the Ministry of Health Promotion and conducted by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
